This is the first I'm reading about this. It seems like there are several people in this thread with MY 2016 vehicles that have had success adding both Car Play and Android Auto.
I was able to update mine, MY 2016 to include both CarPlay and Android Auto. The activator I have, enabled CarPlay when I first used it but not Android Auto. I then had my HMI updated to Dec 17 and used the activator again and it gave me both AA and CP. It is possible!

Mine's an English version though, so may be different if you're elsewhere in the world.

Yes, to my knowledge the update to 2017 needs to be done.

FWIW, we picked up one of the first 2017 cars in Sindelfingen (European delivery) and when the trainers introduced the car to us they didn't realize Android Auto was available. I ended up showing them how it worked after they insisted it wasn't an option yet. It took a couple different phones to find one that would couple and I still don't find it easy to use. In fact I don't use the option at all since I grab audio off the satellite and prefer the phone's interface for Waze.

Can you show me the model of activator that you used? I have Dec 17 and the little activator I used did not work.
Thanks

I have the code 520 and two USB ports (one with the image of a tablet or something like that). My build date is March of 2016. I THINK my issue now is that my HMI version is too new. 12/2017. I believe if the dealer had updated my radio to 11/2017, my OBD2 device would work, but I'm not 100% certain.

Thanks,
Jeff
This is my ODB2

I have one of those readers from china (same bleu one posted above). If anyone wants to borrow it, you are welcome to. Just need to send me a shipping label and promise to ship it back to me when you are done.

FYI -- it did NOT work with my MY2016, build date of 10/15 GLA

DataMB

Actually to be sure your ODB2 will work in your car you hace to verify what type of radio you have in your car. Try to get it with DataMB.com, the code line is around 520 for the radio. It must be: 520 AUDIO 20 RADIO WITH USB INTERFACE NTG5.
Thank you for this. I do not have 520 and instead have 523 RADIO AUDIO 20 so it would seem I am out of luck.

Did you have your HU updated to at least Dec '17 when you tried it? I also have a 10/15 GLA with the right usb hardware and updated HU....just havent pulled the trigger on an activator because I can't get a straight answer :-/

I'm in a similar situation, except I have purchased the small blue activator and it didn't work for me. I'm hoping someone with HMI version Dec '17 confirms a device that worked for them.

Had CarPlay added to my 2016 (built 11/15) thanks to this thread. Much appreciated.
Added Mercedes smartphone integration kit from the dealer ($106) and then had the HMU software updated ($180).

Can you please gimme some more detail; I just purchased a 2016 that was build before 12.2015 and that doesn’t have CarPlay.
Would love if you can give me more details about how you found out about all info needed about the car and how you went about getting CarPlay to work.

Hello all, so I’ve read through all the pages and didn’t find the similar situation. I want to unlock Carplay in my GLA 220d 4matic, bought in 2017 - facelift model 2018). Local MB shop is telling me that there is no official way to have CarPlay installed in my case, because my car doesn’t have the new MBUX system. It has Audio 20, I checked VIN decoder site and the code is 522. Has anyone had any luck with my model of the car? Any help would be much appreciated.

Yeah, based on my VIN check it is. I’m just not sure if VIN check shows the difference between NTG5 and 5.1. Is that important? I tried going to engineering mode to check, but nothing when I’m pressing red call, 1 and #.

So I feel as though I've tried everything to get my system to add Android Auto/CarPlay. To summarize, I have a January 2016 build GLA250. My VIN decode indicates:
14U - Smartphone Integration Package
16U - Smartphone Integration Carplay
17U - Smartphone Integration Android Auto
522 - Audio 20 NTG5

I have the dual USB ports in the center console with the image of the tablet on one port.
I had the dealer update the HMI Version to 12.12.2017
I've tried both blue form factors of the activator. Two of the short style ones from Alibaba and one of the longer ones from Amazon.
In all cases, the DIAG screen flashes for a few seconds (like 2-3), the screen goes black for a few seconds and then the system boots up without Android Auto or Carplay as a new menu option unlike it does in the videos I've watched.

I'm out of ideas. Thoughts?

Thanks,
Jeff
