I have an March 2016 build GLA250 without COMAND and have been told there's no way to get Android Auto. I had a loaner 2017 without COMAND that did have Android Auto (I don't know what COMAND looks like, the GUI was nearly identical to my 2016). What am I missing from my 2016 that the 2017 has? I haven't been able to get an answer to that.

Thanks,
Jeff
I just got my 2016 GLA HMI version 6/2016 to 12/2017. Can someone confirm which "activator" I need to be looking for?
Thanks, Jeff

I have another confirmation that Carplay and Android Auto can be activated on pre-December 15 GLA's. After discovering Carplay settings in the engineering menu I decided to roll the dice and try an OBD activator. I bought one of the larger blue ones that cost about $80. It unlocked carplay no problem, but not andoid auto. So I took it to the dealer and asked for a firmware upgrade to a version between 11/16 and 11/17. They ended up giving me 12/17, and I lost carplay and the activator stopped working. I ended up learning that there are 2 different activation methods and 11/17 seems to be the cutoff. I got one of the smaller activators that claimed to work with 2018+ cars and it worked great. Have Auto and Carplay now.

My GLA:
MY 2016
Release Date: Oct 2015
Delivery Date: Early Nov 2015
Audio 20 Radio Navigation Capable NTG5. VIN code 522
HMI Version 13.07.2015
USB module part A1728201600. Did not need to change.

I just purchased and received this style activator and it doesn't seem to do anything. I get the "DIAG" on my screen and a couple of reboots, but it doesn't add the option for Carplay or Android Auto. Am I missing something?

Thanks,

Jeff

There were no instructions provided, but I did find a tutorial and watched a couple of videos. The reason I purchased the smaller one is because I read, earlier in this same thread, that if your HMI was updated to a version past a certain date, then the smaller one was the recommended one. Also, I've been told that the activator will not work on multiple vehicles, meaning once it's been used to update one vehicle, it's no longer usable. I cannot confirm this, however.

Thanks,
Jeff
You radio is probably not up to date for using this device.
My build date is January of 2016 and I paid to have the dealer update the HMI to the 12/12/2017 version. Is there more I need to do?

Thanks,
Jeff
please see

Please see the threads below. enter yo MBDATA.COM, verify MY, code 520 (radio). Do you have the two USB ports ?? The OBD2 seems similar to the one I have.
I have the code 520 and two USB ports (one with the image of a tablet or something like that). My build date is March of 2016. I THINK my issue now is that my HMI version is too new. 12/2017. I believe if the dealer had updated my radio to 11/2017, my OBD2 device would work, but I'm not 100% certain.

Thanks,
Jeff
I'm not sure if you have a question here but 2016 was Apple Car Play only. Android was added in 2017.
This is the first I'm reading about this. It seems like there are several people in this thread with MY 2016 vehicles that have had success adding both Car Play and Android Auto.
I was able to update mine, MY 2016 to include both CarPlay and Android Auto. The activator I have, enabled CarPlay when I first used it but not Android Auto. I then had my HMI updated to Dec 17 and used the activator again and it gave me both AA and CP. It is possible!

Mine's an English version though, so may be different if you're elsewhere in the world.

Can you show me the model of activator that you used? I have Dec 17 and the little activator I used did not work.
Thanks
Did you have your HU updated to at least Dec '17 when you tried it? I also have a 10/15 GLA with the right usb hardware and updated HU....just havent pulled the trigger on an activator because I can't get a straight answer :-/
I'm in a similar situation, except I have purchased the small blue activator and it didn't work for me. I'm hoping someone with HMI version Dec '17 confirms a device that worked for them.
So I feel as though I've tried everything to get my system to add Android Auto/CarPlay. To summarize, I have a January 2016 build GLA250. My VIN decode indicates:
14U - Smartphone Integration Package
16U - Smartphone Integration Carplay
17U - Smartphone Integration Android Auto
522 - Audio 20 NTG5

I have the dual USB ports in the center console with the image of the tablet on one port.
I had the dealer update the HMI Version to 12.12.2017
I've tried both blue form factors of the activator. Two of the short style ones from Alibaba and one of the longer ones from Amazon.
In all cases, the DIAG screen flashes for a few seconds (like 2-3), the screen goes black for a few seconds and then the system boots up without Android Auto or Carplay as a new menu option unlike it does in the videos I've watched.

I'm out of ideas. Thoughts?

Thanks,
Jeff

Based on your VIN decoding with 16U included you should have already had Carplay installed I think. You wouldn’t need to even use those activators...
I'm not really sure why any of that is on my VIN decode, I definitely did not pay for that option and it was not on my window sticker. A couple of years ago, I tried paying the dealer to add it and they said it was not an option for them to add it because I did not have the comand audio system....I can't explain it....

Did you see this option? Also try to use the original USB cable.

I do not see that as an option. Where does that appear? Neither Android Auto nor CarPlay show up in the menus like I've seen in the videos I've watched. I tried it using the same cable that works with Android Auto in my Ford.....

Thanks,
Jeff
