Transmission woes

2500 miles into my GLA ownership, I'm starting to experience some transmission issues and wondering if anyone else has had this happen?

Often when I shift into reverse, it seems like it doesn't engage right away so I'll wait a moment, slowly apply throttle (we're talking maybe another 300-500rpm), and then the tranny will violently engage, spilling coffee and snapping everyone's necks in the vehicle. Seems to happen mostly when the car has been fully brought up to temp, parked, and started before it is completely cool again.

At first I thought it was me, but the same thing happened to my wife on Sunday when she was driving. And then this morning, I was trying to parallel park, and when shifting from reverse to drive the same thing happened; didn't appear to engage, so I went to neutral and back to drive again, waited a second or so, applied a small amount of throttle, and then there was a violent shift into 1st that almost put me into the back bumper of the car I was parking behind.

Anyone else experienced an issue similar to this before I bring it in to have it looked at?

Rebellion throttle response system

Some one on this forum has installed the Rebellion Throttle Respons sysytem o their AMG 45.
Throttle Response System for the A/CLA/GLA 45 AMG - Rebellion Automotive

Can you tell me how easy or difficult the install was, and how seamlessly it affects acceleration and response?
I'm eager to try it, unless my dealer can update my tranny software to fix the hesitation.

Hello bikerbob

I put a Rebellion stage 1 tune in my 45 and it fixed the throttle response, its a lot more cost but its a lot more power >:D
the tune is pretty easy to fit if you don't have fat fingers :|

This has become a repeatable issue for me at this point. Dealer requested video which they have sent to MB.

Here's what happened last night; GLA had been parked in my garage for about 12 hours. Cold engine, cold transmission. Started, shifted into reverse, gave it gas and nothing. Shifted back into park, waited a few seconds, shifted back into reverse and had same issue. Dealer suspected maybe the parking pawl wasn't disengaging, but as you can see from the video I'm actually moving backwards ever so slightly.

Because the shift is usually violent (you'll hear my tires chirp here), I was feathering the throttle slightly until it engaged. You'll know when it finally shifts :)

This is getting really frustrating and I hope MB gets back to me with a solution soon.

Does it void warranty?

It's cheap enough to be tempting for a try but I am not sure if there are big risks with it.

Like almost too good to be true?

What I've been reading seems to imply that they are not specifically looking for tunes. In other words people go in and get mundane warranty work with no ill effects because they are not checking for tunes as part of the process. I have yet to find an instance of someone getting major work done such as a blown transmission with a tune and seeing if they skated through or not either here or on the CLA forums. It is very possible they have ways to check this that are not used in the normal day to day. I've ran into a couple instances of cars that used mechanical means to measure rail pressure (a simple pop off valve that let go at a preset pressure) and one that measured boost (a secondary boost meter) both of which were built into the engine to detect tunes. Does the Merc have similar? I don't know, haven't seen proofs to indicate either yes or no. It is important though to remember that the proof isn't out there till the first guy goes down in flames and reports such on the internet. Or not.

To be sure, remember to take the thing off before you go in, several people have reported having their car flagged by MB after going in with a tuning box and what that means is usually a voiding of the warranty on the entire powertrain. If you want to play the mod game the conventional wisdom is simple. You should be capable of and prepared to be your own warranty station.

Transmission shifted into limp mode twice in the last 10 days. Both times traveling over 70 mph in the rain and floored the throttle. I had to pull over turn the car off and back on then everything ran fine except I have a check engine light. I checked the oil, coolant gas cap. All of those are fine. I have an appointment next week has anybody had a similar issue? I have about 12,000 miles on the car

UPDATE: Spoke with the dealership this morning. The said since my last visit a few weeks ago, there was a new service bulletin from MB and they are pulling my transmission to "replace some parts". The service advisor couldn't tell me what, but I plan on finding out (as well as getting the info on that bulletin) when I pick up my GLA on Wednesday.

Wow, at that level of disassembly, I would highly question whether the dealership techs will get everything re-assembled exactly as factory built. Especially if they're getting paid flat rate for an engine/transmission R&R. Would take an experienced, skilled and conscientious tech to do it right. Hope your dealership employs that type of tech.

My dealer visit revealed a code for a misfire on cylinder number 1 see report enclosed.

Glad to hear they got it fixed for you. Bummer it took so long.

My GLA has another thousand miles on it since the clutch replacement and it's still running smooth. Talked to my Service Writer last week just to let him know things were all good and he said there still isn't a recall notice or TSB that points to an ongoing issue.

However, the tech who worked on my GLA said he was able to find multiple similar issues on his internal tech forum, where replacing the clutch is the solution.

Long story short, if it's shifting rough bring it in. And of course, video helps. I know for a fact that MBUSA has my clip on file.

That's because there is no service bulletin for this issue. It's being handled on a case by case basis.

I was able to get my problem addressed quickly because I had video, and the tech was smart enough to look on the internal MB tech forum they have and see similar issues where replacing the dual clutch solved the problem.
