Transmission woes

2500 miles into my GLA ownership, I'm starting to experience some transmission issues and wondering if anyone else has had this happen?

Often when I shift into reverse, it seems like it doesn't engage right away so I'll wait a moment, slowly apply throttle (we're talking maybe another 300-500rpm), and then the tranny will violently engage, spilling coffee and snapping everyone's necks in the vehicle. Seems to happen mostly when the car has been fully brought up to temp, parked, and started before it is completely cool again.

At first I thought it was me, but the same thing happened to my wife on Sunday when she was driving. And then this morning, I was trying to parallel park, and when shifting from reverse to drive the same thing happened; didn't appear to engage, so I went to neutral and back to drive again, waited a second or so, applied a small amount of throttle, and then there was a violent shift into 1st that almost put me into the back bumper of the car I was parking behind.

Anyone else experienced an issue similar to this before I bring it in to have it looked at?

Yeah I need some details too, like what specific update is it? I would like to bring it to my dealership and be able to tell them exactly which update it is.

I would be pretty happy just to get a quicker launch off a stop. I see these reviews getting better than 4.8sec on 0-60 MB states on the GLA45 but just imagine how much better that time would be if the take off wasn't so sluggish/hesitant?

I am actually talking about day to day driving, sometimes from a red alert, it feel like I step on the gas pedal and it takes a second before the car moves. And in Sports Mode, at times it feels more sluggish where you step on the gas and it does nothing and you kind of have to push further and the car just jumps forward.

I am not quite sure why MB doesn't fix it if it is a simple software calibration?

I spoke to my wife about this, since i put the Rebellion tune in it doesnt happen anymore
She said before the tune she was very hesitant about pulling out at intersections when cars were coming towards her, she said she puts her foot down and the car goes with no hesitation
I have had aftermarket tunes in my last 3 cars, the extra power is great for the first few weeks but its more about the driveability that i like

Hope this helps you

The DCT should have a little 'play' in it because it is an automated 'manual' utilizing clutch-packs, however, that sounds like EXCESSIVE play. I would have the dealer check into it. I have not heard of this issue in the CLA forums, so I don't think it's a widespread issue with this particular transmission.

Hopefully it just needs a software update

Has there been a case where Benz has done this before? Where they simply update a software to fix such a problem? Because it has been an ongoing issue with the CLA from the beginning and it's been more than a year and they haven't done anything.

MB has mentioned that they fixed the quick shifts from the CLA to the GLA but they didn't seem to address the issue when the car is from a stand still.

I am experiencing a similar issue with my 2015 GLA45 AMG. When the vehicle is cold and I reverse, drive forward, then reverse again with a little acceleration as in a two-point turn the transmission bangs and the car reacts as though it backed into a wall. The car is at the dealer, but they are unable to duplicate the problem. I am heading in this am to see if I can demonstrate the issue to the dealer.

Yah happens often even after the engine gets a proper warm up. I tend to drive in stop and go traffic for about 45-60 minutes each way per day and I experience it almost daily. Tranny is just erratic though, there are time where it rolls smoothly but sometimes it's just hesitant but that might be dependent on the roads incline/decline?

I am really used to it by now though but I still know it's there.

Finally getting around to sharing an update on my original issue.

Now that the MN weather is getting warmer, I am unable to reproduce the hard/violent shifting from P to R, R to D, and P to D. The dealer had it over the weekend (and only put about 10 miles on it) and were not able to reproduce the issue.

There was no mention of a software update, but I also hadn't read this thread to know there was one to ask while I was there.

HOWEVER, I am noticing some of the symptoms of a laggy engagement from a stop, and my shifts from D to R (i.e. when parking) seem to take forever. Now that I'm not traveling for work over the next few weeks I'm going to grab some video and bring the GLA back into the dealer for another look.

There were a number of issues

1. The car would select neutral when I turned into a side road, especially when it was downshifting. I narrowly avoided an accident on one occasion.
2. There was a violent jerk just as I was about to bring the car to a complete stop in traffic.
3. I had to depress the accelerator pedal a long way before and movement occurred.

All of the above was cured after the update.

When coming to a complete stop in traffic, it would now stay in 2nd and remain so for a couple of seconds then select 1st, this cured the jerk.

The Accelerator now responded to the slightest input.

The car would also automatically downshift the moment I changed driving modes from ECO to SPORT.

Im also experiencing the same violent shift went starting out. I have experienced this in reverse and going forward. Ive only had the car 3 months and brought it back to the dealership. They told me they couldn't duplicate the problem but did the update. This still has not fixed the issue, and to say I'm disappointed is an understatement. Im surprised everyone in the car didn't get whiplash its such a violent shift. Any thoughts on what to try next?

For the GLA 45 owners.... I think the issue with hitting the accelerator from a dead stop is a programmed "soft launch". Race start is one function. But "soft launch" is a program that allows the car to build revs and then just go. In the case of the 45's, some models require a hold on the brake, followed by flooring the gas pedal and watching the revs build and hold at about 3k RPM, then release the brake. The GLA in the US does not operate that way. I believe that all you have to do is accelerate hard from a dead stop. When I do this, whether I'm in S, or M mode, i get a soft launch. The car barely moves and the revs build to 3k RPM's and then it just goes. If you accelerate slowly from a stop, this does not happen.
It seems that we have to accelerate slowly to move immediately, but if you accelerate to much, the car will try to soft launch and just sit still. If this is accurate, then I think it would be better to have the soft launch programmed differently because it would be nice to accelerate more briskly and get the car going ASAP.

The most frightening experience of this car so far this morning, I think I read someone here had a similar experience?

I was stopped on a light, it turns green and I remove my foot off the brakes and slowly step on the gas and then BOOM something just felt like and sounded like I was rear ended. I quickly looked behind me if I did get rear ended and there was no car behind me. It was just scary experience.

After the loud boom and the car suddenly jumping a bit forward it just ran like it usually does.

~700 miles in the car and it was the first time I've experienced it.

My GLA is going into the dealer tomorrow morning. I finally have a few incidents of the violent reverse shift on video, and just yesterday I went to accelerate from a green light and the tranny didn't engage until about 2000 rpm, and then lurched forward. Even my wife has noticed that it constantly "hunts" for gears in eco mode. I'm hoping this is software-related because in the past few weeks this has turned into the most awful-driving vehicle I've ever owned.

Expect an update hopefully by Monday.

After almost a week of test driving by the techs and the shop foreman, the dealership was unable to replicate the issue with my transmission. Even after seeing the video they acknowledge there might be an issue, but they are unsure as to what to do about it.

No software upgrades available for my particular build either. And of course, the transmission feels fine for me over the past two days.

The dealer did open a case with MB to see if there are any similar issues.
