Clunking/Thumping Sound from Rear of 2018 GLA-250 4Matic

My daughter's car is a 2018 Mercedes GLA-250 4Matic. Has 81,702 miles on it. Bought it preowned from a very reputable dealership in 2020.

We'd begun hearing, at lower speeds some of the time when starting off from a dead stop, a thumping/clunking sound that is coming from the rear of the vehicle. When it occurs, it seems to be when going straight as opposed to when turning the steering wheel. You don't have to get to much of any great speed for the sound to dissipate and the car is as quiet as a mouse.

Took it to Firestone to get the tires rotated before she went back to college and asked them about it. They inspected it and said alignment and balancing were both fine but stated that 2 of the tires had some "cupping" characteristics that may be causing the noise, so they replaced the 2 suspect tires with 2 new ones.

We've left home to take the vehicle back to our daughter at college, initially thinking that the previous thumping/clunking sounds were no longer occurring, but they have resurfaced once again as we pulled into our hotel at slow speeds last night.

I'm reading information about this possibly being a rear differential issue or a universal joint.

Any suggestions from anyone on this forum are greatly appreciated as we'd like to fully get to the bottom of the on-and-off noise and get it resolved.

It doesn't happen all the time and just seems to be random as to when it occurs at very low speeds.

Thanks in advance.
