There's a transmitter, the object with the 'eye", there's the computer, the version that you see with different models, and then there's a bracket to mount the transmitter on behind the star. Also, you may have to get a star that works with the transmitter, I modified my grill, and it took me forever to find a decent looking star that was IR and radar transparent.. , and probably a few different wiring harness, and also the stock as you mentioned,. since it's controlled/interfaced by the dash computer display, that display may be different or that computer may have to be flashed to have the software updated to run the Distronic. But.. In all honesty, driving my car quite a bit, it's sort of a waste of money.. I'm sure there's daily commuters who use it in medium traffic, and it works OK,- but if you've got cruise control, and that works pretty well for you. I don't see the payoff of purchasing the components of the system especially if you need to run a new wiring harness, and the car goes back to the dealership for XENTRY reprogramming for the new modules. Here is a sort of breakdown from the Mercedes parts website in Germany-

Remember, the trickiest part is probably going to be the wiring harnesses... Maybe you can leave the existing harness in place and run another set of wires back from the sensor to the distronic brain/box then to the computer? Let us know how it goes, but the wiring could be tricky, unless you pulled out the existing wiring harness and replaced it with the harness that has the terminals for Distronic.. Sometimes the plugs may be part of a Standard wiring harness, and you would just have to plug it in, but I'm not sure if Mercedes does that. I know its common on some Japanese cars....
