To me, it looks like somebody decided at the last minute that a touch screen was needed. I want to rip it off. Or perhaps a thief will beat me to it!
Yea i hear you there, but thats pretty standard for mercedes interiors, especially on the lower class ones. CLA and A class have it, it looks like Mercedes took thier interiors piece for piece for the GLA. the GLA is the CLA with sheetmetal changes.

It definitely wasn't an afterthought. For better or worse, they consciously wanted it too look that way. I agree, with a look like that, I expect it recede into the dash when the car is turned off.
someone at Mercedes consciously designed the GLA,CLA and A class nav screen to look like a glued on GPS unit? Good GOD this is going downhill faster than i thought ;/

I t really does look like it is just a holder for an iPad mini that you glued onto your vehicle. There is no indication, or sign that the rest of the interior wants to be in unison with the navigation screen. Mercedes gets criticized about its navigation screen all the time though, Do they have a reason for making the nav screen like that, or are they just ignoring consumer reactions?

an infotainment screen being one with the dash and not just some screen standing on top of it would be better but i guess this is the new thing to do in the industry. i think even BMW is doing this.
I would just like the smallest indentation so that it looks like it has a spot for itself carved out in the car. You'd just think they would be able to incorporate it better than me buying an aftermarket part and installing it myself on the dashboard.

Mercedes designs all of its navigation screens like this, so some people must like it. I don't think that it doesn't match with the design. It is just different from the style of nav screens in other vehicles that are really put into the console. Having the navigation screen placed more on top of the dashboard sets Mercedes apart from its competitors. I like that it look s very iPad-ish.

Couple things to update this thread.

1. It's actually NOT a touch screen. The Comand Rotary Dial controls it.

2. The new C-Class has it's screen mounted in the same fashion so it does seem like MB is designing this way for the moment. I would MUCH rather have a retracting thin near borderless display. It MAY come down the road, but I wouldn't expect it soon.

I thought they must be off their rocks when i first saw the interior and that fixed stuck on screen. The interior layout of the screen in the X1 beats it hands down. And using the design across all the A, B, C models is crazy.

It has grown on me and now find it tolerable, but still not my first choice.

I'm more disappointed it is not a touchscreen than I am about its location. A touchscreen is so much faster and easier to navigate. The dealer explained to me that MB does not consider touchscreens to be safe when driving. The simple answer is to disable the touchscreen functionality unless the car is in Park, which others have done (e.g. Mazda)

It doesn't bother me at all. It's just a screen that I dial through & is pretty intuitive. Meh. Also being something that looks added on is fine. My previous car was Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. The screen was integrated, it was a Hyundai. So, whatever. Maybe we should demand our cars look more like Hyundai's?

Well,my first thought was also "why did they build it like this" and i really did not like it.But when u think about it,it make sense to build it that way. After some time i started to like it !

When it was only a navigation system it would make sense to build it such a way that it can hide itself (who needs a navigation for all his driving),but it is a infotainment screen so it is useful most of the time when u are driving (backup camera, audio system, fan and airco settings, and so on,actually the only time you would stow it away is when u park your car.
Building the stowing system cost money, you will lose some space inside the dash to stow the screen.(not sure if there is room inside this dash to hide it ?)

The major drawback is it is visible from outside,...

Did i read somewhere that there are 2 sizes in screens (bigger screen when u buy the car with completely factory fitted navigation, and that the bigger one is a touchscreen?

Cheers,
Jan

I have always disliked the look of it. It looks like an aftermarket screen someone added to the car post purchase. BUT after driving the GLA for awhile, I find that this screen placement actually is easier to red than a screen integrated into the dash face.

I agree about the location-it's pretty easy to read, and the look doesn't bother me. I wish they had built in some split screen ability. It's a pain going through screens looking for the one you want. Our Lexus lets us have a couple of different things at once. It would be especially good to have something else on with the map. Maybe that's possible with the 2016, that doesn't use Becker. I am still trying to figure out the button to the left of the volume control labeled DISC. It probably should be labeled MEDIA or SOURCE, because that's the one you push to change where your noise comes from.
