Rear judder noise related to MOE tires or Rear Diff Oil?

I recently purchased a 2018 GLA and noticed a slight judder noise coming from the rear when turning left or right into a road and accelerating. I took it to a garage but they couldn’t see anything wrong and said it is probably something to do with the 4 wheel drive system.
After reading some info this evening about run flat tyres (which is what I have), I am thinking this might be a factor. I have read that they are more noisy and normal tyres and handling can be an issue. Could this be the problem? Has anyone had this experience?

So I had the issue diagnosed and it is the rear diff that had to be replaced. The garage that has diagnosed it have quite £3500 for the part and they have some connection with Mercedes themselves although they are independent. Doesn’t this sound a tad expensive???

Do you have 4Matic AWD?

Yes, expensive, but still in the typical range of a job like this. Call it 5K at least with labour and tax. "Connection" sounds like either a justification for pricing, or they happen to know a guy in service dept. who can get WIS diagrams and such. Not worth a premium if they're charging one.

If my car's rear diff fails (or other major driveline/engine components), I will probably not keep it after the repair. Better to sell and move on IMO before other issues start to appear. But I understand that's not an option for everyone, just my 2 cents.
Yes it is 4matic. The guy also said that use did some research on the rear diff and they’re usually only good for 50K miles. What good is that to anyone?

But the car has only done 39k miles and I have had it 2 months so I’m looking into whether the 3 month warranty can cover some or all of the work that needs doing. Surely this can’t be down to wear and tear but a failed part.

Hello all, just want to share a fix for a rear diff noise in our 2017 GLA 250 4matic which began making a rumbling sound from the rear at around 70k klms while turning either left or right. It also developed a 'thump' when coming to a standstill which the Mercedes service department advised me is 'normal' when the rear diff disengages. Mercedes checked our service history and advised they had never changed the rear diff oil. The sound has been increasing over the last 6 months to the point where neither my wife nor I wanted to drive the car. I got our mechanic to change the rear diff oil (MB only oil) and the sounds have gone. The car is noticeably more nimble and driving as it should be.

My 2017 250 4matic was starting to do the same thing. I bought it online from a dealer so had a two year certified used car warranty on it. Turns out when I booked it in for service I had two days left on the warranty. The service technician was good and asked me to drive it round the lot. He identified the problem immediately. Had a full service done on it , all oils changed, transmission and rear diff serviced and oils changed and when I read the report they indicated that the read diff clutch was sticking

"Investigate knocking/clunk noise from rear of vehicle
Rear differential clutch sticking
Road test vehicle and confirmed customer complaint
Connect xentry and run quick test - No fault present
Found TIPS doc relating to fault
Carried out rear differential oil flush and carry out rear
diff adaption
Road test vehicle and check operation"

All work was done under warranty and the car runs like a dream. I couldn't be happier but my only problem is that it gets into 7th gear to early and the engine seems to labor at 80kph, so I decided to run it in sports mode for a while. Wow the car is dangerous in sports mode, but I love it.

And the report back is?
Sorry for the late report……….So….after one garage had a look, and assumed it could be the rear diff, they then passed me on to a gearbox specialist and then they recommended me to go to another Mercedes specialist today. They diagnosed that the rear diff more than likely needs an oil service. They have seen this before and are certain that this will rectify the problem. If not………then it will be an expensive new rear diff. The rear diff oil service is being done next Wednesday so I will do my best to report back promptly.
