Mercedes-Benz is planning on creating another crossover that will be even smaller than the GLA. This new crossover will be based on the Renault Captur.

We really don't know much more than that, but given this tiny crumb of info, do you think that the X-Class will be a good move for Benz, or is it moving the brand too far down market? I mean the GLA is already pretty cheap for a Benz.

They are in business to make a profit, and if they can successfully cover the entire range of small to large, car to SUV, bus and truck, then they will.

Remember that they already have the A-class in Europe and share/ownership of the Smart-for-2.

Its not about the size of the car so much as the cost. Smart is (1) a separate brand so it doesn't dilute Benz, and (2) is still fairly up market even though its really small. I think that this new X-Class is going to not be nice enough to live up to Mercedes-Benz's high standards. I can't see how it can while keeping the price low.

Bplayers got it right, they're playing a volume game now. MB is counting that at $20K Mercedes will win hands down against Nissan or Toyota or Chevrolet. They're right, MB will win, until they don't. They only get to trade on their brand name for so long before people begin to see the cracks in the armor.

its the insatiable thirst for growth...

It will.
Plus the thing people worry about when it comes to buying german is nothing to worry about when you buy new. You have warranty!
