The winds of change are in the air as Mercedes has finally surpassed BMW in US sales. BMW led the way for the first 8 months of the year, but Mercedes' strategy to push cheaper small cars in the US seems to finally be working.

Mercedes sold 27,315 units in the US in September, which is a 11 percent increase over last year's September. In comparison, BMW sold 25,586 units in September, That means that BMW was outsold by 1,729 units in September.

Overall BMW is still in the lead though with 236,591 units sold so far this year in the US compared to Mercedes' 233,211.

As a note, Lexus was the only other luxury brand to break the 200,000 unit mark this year, which means that the Germans have the Japanese hot on their heels.
