Mercedes-Benz already has released an E-Class with a nine-speed transmission, and the USA will be getting one within the next few years. The new transmission is called 9G-TRONIC, and right now it is available exclusively in the E350 Blue TEC sedan and wagon. The nine different gears are supposed to increase smoothness and boost fuel efficiency.
The transmission comes with a manual mode that promises to deliver crisp changes when driving. A direct control system enables short and barely perceptible gear changes. Multiple gears can also be skipped when shifting up or down.
Not on the top of my list of cool features I want for my car, but I would be interested to test drive a car with nine gears.
