That's a lot more automation than when I was there in 2016. Also, I didn't see him scanning any codes on the parts. One of the things they stressed to me was that every part was scanned in for manufacturing date and lot number so they could proactively track any problems for each and every motor.

My factory-visit experience as well. But perhaps they left that footage on the cutting room floor, and/or negated same, in deference to a more seamless assembly-only video? And to showcase the "one man - one engine" knowledge and skill (not needing computer oversight)?

Looks like that system turned out well for them, I'm sure they've tracked down all the GLAs that have had the cylinder heads blow hahahaha 😂

I was thinking that all of that automation takes time to dial in. Then if they aren't tracking parts anymore ...

There are a lot of places that things can go wrong in manufacturing, let alone the supply chain problems and absenteeism due to the pandemic. A lot of those assemblies looked like they were put together before the motor builder ever laid eyes on them. And the cylinder head problems seem to be only in the last couple of years.

I think that was a M139 motor. That small belt. I wonder what it is for. A bit of a worry? it seemed to link two subassemblies deep in the motor. I guess it was oil resistant.
Lots of great face profiles, handsome chap - I would have liked a lot more of the engine even more handsome! I thought a lot was missing. Traveling robotic cabinets kept blocking the cameras! It really was an assembly by “one man”. That okay, and a good idea.
I enjoyed watching the video.

My new Xentry rig comes in on Monday, hopefully. I'll have an in depth look at the M139.
That belt is most likely an oil pump drive belt.
And it may be oil resistant, but buried that deep into the engine, it really has to be heat cycling resistant. It's not a timing belt, it's not like it skips a tooth and ...kaboom!
But still, exactly how difficult is it to get there?

Also, M139 AMG owners:
Can you please have an in-depth look at the maintenance card of your car and ... find this belt?

Because:
My AMG didn't come with a maintenance card and I had to dig the web pretty deep, to find one (including messaging conversation with factory guy on the AMG lounge). See, there is a supplement in that leather puch that has the owner's manual called Maintenance and Warranty. That is NOT the maintenance card.

At the same time, once I DID have the maintenance card, I noticed that not EVERYTHING that SHOULD be there, IS there.
So, this belt ...may not be on the list.

So, it is a toothed belt for the oil pump.
The pump is called an oil pump with integrated vacuum pump.
THe vacuum pump I think we have on the X156 too, I remember having discussed here why there's a vacuum pump and why manufacturers have stopped using the engine natural vacuum.
So maybe the vacuum pump is just the "normal" vacuum pump.
But anyway, the instructions are for removing the pump and that has something to do with the removal of the timing chain slide guide. So, you have to dig in all the way to the timing chain, before you get to this.
Then however, there is an extractor device that is a plate, which has to be installed, before the step of removing this belt.
What this means to me, is that they had to find a simplified way to tension this belt. The simplified way is that there is no tensioner, but you can't get the belt in and out without a ..press. You're pressing the belt out.
