After calling md roadside for a jumpstart on my 2017 gla250 turbo they sent a sprinter for Los Angeles mercedes, he hooked up a battery to the battery and a jumper to the jumpstart dock, 4 cables total 3 on terminals and one grounded, not at all like the owners manual suggestion and he didn’t wait the 15minutes either, he said they needed to tow it to his shop, before that I had it charged and the battery tested and they are both fine. the shop says they aren’t to blame, even though the car has been exclusively serviced by Mercedes, was 94 days away from service and had just hit 50000. They say it’s the starter and it will cost 2121.07 to fix but they haven’t done any diagnostics that they will show me to prove that and when I tell her I want every part they take off the woman says she will tell service and hope they remember. My car has been there almost a month now, no loaner. I’ve missed over a weeks worth of work, a neurologist appointmen i desperately needed, christmas with my family and have had to spend about 2k In expenses living without a car, on top of having to pay my already high car payment and insurance. If anyone has advice please share it. Need help to fight Mercedes, organized by Gavin Dowd

Although electric starter motors are generally a long-lived component anything can go bad.

When you had your main 12V lead-acid battery checked was it just an instantaneous type of test or an actual chemical-stress test to more precisely ascertain available capacity? I've had to have the main battery replaced twice on one of our MY2018 (but no replacement needed on the other). Although you're in a more temperate climate it still takes significant "cold cranking amps" to engage the starter motor and commence the combustion cycle. A six year old lead-acid battery is approaching its end of life, although many go on for longer.

Of course if it is the starter motor itself then the relative health of the battery is less relevant.

There are a number of acceptable ways to connect a jumper cable set and/or jump pack/auxiliary battery. The OM depiction is of course the lowest common denominator presentation. Actually jumper cables are a fairly antiquated methodology, with a Li-ion jump pack the more modern approach. I carry such a pack in all my ICE vehicles.

Do keep a close eye on the service and writeup, as one should always do.

Since you're out of warranty, you can have a different shop take a look. HG Performance in San Marcos is an independent MB specialist. It's pretty far from LA, but it might be worth the drive if their service is good.

You make some very strong claims that can lead to legal issues potentially. firstly, you need to prove that an improper jump start was done and furthermore that it caused the issue. an independent technician will be able to do that, but if you do decide to pursue a legal battle, MB could question the qualifications of the mechanic.
