Hidden Hitch for GLA45 AMG

348 Views 12 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  MadDogMark
I just picked up a GLA45 AMG and I would like to carry bikes on it. A hitch would be ideal for secureness, aerodynamics, and ease of use, but I see that the main option is to use a Curt hitch that I find to be a bit of an eye sore, plus some trimming is needed to make it fit.

Is there any hidden hitch option that will work? Stealth hitches doesn't seem to offer one for GLA class vehicles. I see there are some european style hidden hitches available that could potentially be imported, but are there any complications with going that route if I have a North American version of the vehicle? Also curious about bike rack compatibility.

Thanks all.

Yes I have a 2015 as well, I forgot to mention. What brand/model is your hitch? I'm looking for one that is completely invisible when not in use. So detachable or otherwise hidden.

It's a Stealth Hitch brand hitch. I even sent them feedback after install how to make their procedure better. Years later another forum member complained that Stealth Hitches wouldn't ship them a hitch which didn't make sense to me. They shipped mine right to my door.
Great job on that

Thanks! Great job on that. It looks super clean. I emailed stealth hitches yesterday and they said they didn't have anything for my car. Do you know what model of hitch you used from Stealth?
I just shared them with over email and they said it's discontinued. Looks like I'll be going with a roof rack instead :(
Supremely disappointing to be sure. This is the first car I've owned that I'm considering replacing with another identical model. I REALLY like having a hitch for bikes, my e-bike weighs 55 pounds and I won't lift that on my roof.

If I were in your shoes (knowing what I know today) I would ask them if they will make me a "custom" (following the old mfg guidelines) for $1000. If they said no, I'd ask for $1200. Since there is no development, just follow old mfg drawings for the sub-frame. Yes I know fixed hitches cost $300. I personally get $900 of value out of having a QD on my hitch. It hurts at purchase, but all smiles from there. Track organizers would be upset at me if I dragged my hitch on the track. Especially Laguna Seca since they'll have new tarmac this year.

They'd still say no, but these are all handmade in the US, so it's not THAT farfetched to make a one-off.

For me, now I have to make sure I have enough overlap between cars to move the parts over :(

Well I just have a analogue enduro and dh bikes right now so it's not that big of a deal to put them on the roof. Main concern is having to drive slower but I'll get over it. If I end up getting an e-bike I'll probably re-consider the hitch.
Yeah, I don't care to lift bikes overhead even if it's a carbon road bike (though I too only MTB). Just posting to say that with my one-up rack and a couple bikes, I have no issues using the kick-down pedal at over 400 horse, those bikes stay in place. I'm not experienced with roof racks, but if I had to baby the throttle, that's a non-starter. Not tracking with bikes up there, but merging is merging, and sometimes requires the needful.

Alright I decided to go with the Curt hitch since I realized I really don't want to drive differently to accommodate the roof rack with the beautiful twisty roads around me on the way to the trail head. I have an install appointment booked for later this week. I know you went with a different hitch but when you have your receiver connected do you ever scrape the ground on speed bumps, steep driveways, etc?
No, and my car has the lowering sport springs. Be on the installer though, I hear bumper cutting is needed, probably why it doesn’t scrape. If you don’t tell them, they will cut whatever….
I am curious, hitch as in towing hitch?

My manual says no tow hitch on the 45 AMG.
