Hi Everyone i recently bought a new Fuel cap for my GLA 45 AMG since in the old one the small wire snapped in Half. When i bought it i went for the AMG one which said on the Website was compatible with my car. The Problem however is that in the new one there is a pin whereas the old one was completely flat. Because of the way my fuel door is constructed the pin hits the body colored part of it because its to long. Very annoyingly it fell down and scratched my paint so my question would be could i just cut the pin off or would that cause something like the fuel leaking out or not venting properly. The Pin is hollow in the Middle and has two small holes if i cut it off it would make a bigger hole to the spring which is located in the middle.

Thanks in Advance

The pin should not be cut. It is meant to be used to hold the fuel cap while fueling.

You will find a small circular hole on the top of the fuel door arm. Insert the pin there while fueling the car.

For some reason, your replacement fuel cap is not the same as your original. My car has the same as your car originally had, but my GLE has the same one as your replacement.

Sounds like you have the wrong model cap. Our 2017 45 has the tether that we hang over the hook on the fuel door to hold the cap away from the body when filling.
Could be just be a misreading/mistyping thing, but hanging by the tether? There’s an actual cut out in the hinge of the flap to fit the entire cap into, as can be seen on the pic posted above.

Ah I see. Mine sits all crooked and thus fell down and hit the fender because the top part is made from aluminum it made a small scratch I thought about leaving it hanging from the wire but I’m scared that overtime through wear and tear some scratches may appear since the pin is only for the newer models to hold it in and serves no Purpose otherwise I might just cut it off

That scratch has been bugging me for the past few days now

That cavity sure looks like the cap should fit in, but IMHO it doesn't fit securely. I did have it fall out once. It hit the fender causing no damage. But that was enough. I simply found it a lot quicker and more fool proof to hang it down. I do the same thing on my 997 (2010 911).
Same here, it has that little stand up ear, I just take the plastic line and put it behind that and let it hang.
