ok so i have tried installing this motor and im not having much luck. (i just now thought maybe i need to plug it in and let it rotate) If i install it like it came the exhaust flap is open and the motor does not want to close. it does wiggle some but seem like its struggling to close in the morning ill try plugging it in and seeing if it rotates and stays. any help would be appreciated

Did you bench test it prior to installation? The actuator powers open (12V @ ~WOT) and spring closes the exhaust flap. So it "fails closed." Although a new part perhaps it's defective? The spring is usually the culprit as discussed earlier in this thread.

Did you procure the Benz or similar Audi part?

Again, you may be better served first bench testing it, even tho' a new part, with a 12VDC source to see that it properly electrically-opens with voltage applied and spring-closes with no voltage. Without voltage applied there is no way for the motor to hold it open. Unless again it's just a new-bad part, which although rare can happen.

In vehicle use it should only open the exhaust flap upon near wide-open throttle (WOT) so "cycling the key" won't tell you anything.
Yes the spring broke this Is a new Benz assembly . I'm going to try plugging it in and cycling the key maybe the motor came in the flap open position

You may also want to look for a "shipping block" of some sort? Although when I acquired the similar Audi part it was already in the spring closed position and electrically activated just fine.

And of course you may want to use some WD-40 or other penetrant to assure the actual exhaust flap is freely moving.
Yea im thinking it was shipped in the wot position so I'll ether plug it in and see if it moves which it should go to closed if its in the open poison or I'll get out the power probe

ok so i marked where the spring was located and plugged it in. key on did nothing but once i started the car and gave it some throttle the motor turned in a different location than it was previously and stayed in that position. now with the flap in the closed position the motor bolts right up

Well done! I knew you'd work it out. :)

It was quite some time ago but I'm pretty sure I ensured the flap was already closed before engaging the new actuator (similar arrangement and part on an Audi TTS). I know I used penetrant to ease things along. After all, that exhaust flap and adjacent actuator live in a very harsh environment.
huey when you installed yours was it in the closed position?

Dealer wanted $1600 (WTF??! o_O) to replace my actuator, so I did some more Googling and found out this exact same actuator is used in many brands of cars from Audi to Kia to Dodge. Then I found out Mopar sells just the replacement spring for around $30-$40. I ordered off of eBay, but it's available just about anywhere, including your local Dodge dealers if you're in a hurry. Just got it in today and it's an identical replacement. Part number is 68319331AA.

Hope this helps someone! :)

Good find indeed. This further demonstrates that we all have "world cars" these days. Now we know MB, Audi and Mopar labeled are actually the same part, and likely many others. Mopar is of course historically Chrysler (now Netherlands Stellantis) but part made in Germany.

btw: my prior Miata had a number of Ford parts, but of course Ford had a financial interest in same. Similar to when Daimler ran Jeep.

Hi need to replace the actuator on my exhaust flap on my 2015 CLA220 should the flap be open or closed?

hi,,
just joined from Belfast northern ireland
just got my 2016 GLA 220 d , the engine light was on and was diagnosed as per MB quote.
i got it scanned and deleted but will probably come on again, the guy who deleted it said if it comes on again he can delete it for £140.
Reading on here it seems like a spring has gone bad?
thanks in advance
john

Welcome!

From the Benz diagnostic it would seem there is an issue with the exhaust flap actuator and as you've read here in most cases it's due to spring failure as the flap relies on same to close (non-energized normally closed).

Generally this secondary exhaust route flap resides only on the performance models (opening only on near-wide open throttle), but then I have no experience with the 220d (diesel) so someone more familiar will likely have better insight.

I'm a bit perplexed as to why Benz would cite "recommend replacement of exhaust" unless that's just a general statement and they are only referring to the exhaust flap mechanism?
