Update after look at the parts diagram:

My new WAG is that the only difference is sport cats and the exhaust button....

That makes sense. I remember the sport exhaust option was only $650 USD. So I suppose the differences between sport and standard is not that great.

I wonder if it is possible to retrofit the button and the cats.

OFFICIAL ANSWER!

From a mechanic in Germany familiar w/ our cars:
Sport exhaust = 2 big cats and 1 muffler
Performance = 1 small cat and 1 muffler

Which now explains why the upgrade is so cheap....

Sooo, as far as i'm concerned that should green light us for a Weistec downpipe since we would technically still have 1 cat (assuming the second one is a true legal cat and not just for sound)

The pesky button, hmmmm that's a good question. Let's research and see what's out there.

Little late to the party, but I looked into this pretty extensively.

The only difference between the two is the main line.. but what you are calling cats, are actually resonators. The cat is in the downpipe in both systems.

If you don't have the button your valves are still controlled electronically, so for retrofit I'm thinking if you don't have the button you should expect the valves to work as they did before when you change driving modes.

Exactly. Supposedly on the 2016 it's the same exact thing but you have the option of opening up the valves in comfort mode as well!

I desperately need to find out how to retrofit that exhaust!!!!
To the OP:

Here's what you need...

In the photo below you need parts 1 & 2. Those are the performance exhaust parts that are different. They are listed as "high efficiency" in the parts catalog. (To be honest you would probably get better sound and better performance out of an aftermarket set-up for the same or less money)

In cars w/ sport exhaust it is only ONE pipe, including the downpipe, and it goes all the way to part 3.

As for the button, this module from Renntech is probably the cheapest, easiest, and ultimately best option.
(I say best b/c it has a mode where you can keep the pipe open ALL the time).

The other options for the valve would be to leave it stock and just put the car in sport mode to open up the valve, or physically hack the valve to keep it open all the time (which is what I'm going to do tomorrow. It only cost about $15, Fully reversible, and no CEL).

This was fun!

The schematics are really confusing, but you actually replace #3 . The schematic is the same for the sport and performance exhaust, and only part #3 is different between the two systems. There is another schematic that isn't High Output/Efficiency, and if thats what you're referring to, thats the GLA 250's system. I VIN checked with a dealer two cars (one with and one without performance exhaust) and #3 is the only difference between the two.

So does the video show that really all you have to do is unplug the valve from the wiring harness to keep the valves open 100%?

:confused:It seems like $580 is a lot of money for the Renntech solution when you can accomplish the same thing by just unplugging it?

It is a better solution than just unplugging the flap. But it is too expensive. I have this in my BMW F80 M3.

CG Precision Variable Sound Controller (VSC-2) for 2015+ BMW M3/M4/X5M/X6M - 00000VSC2

It does what the Renntech solution does and more, because it has to control 2 valves instead of just one in our GLA 45.

I paid less than $200 when it was new. It is $200 now. less than half the price of Renntech's. Renntech's is more expensive, probably because the BMW installed base is much larger than MB's.

Your photo makes sense.

I was going off MB direct parts. On their schematic pics It is confusing, especially since I cannot see any difference in pipe 3 in the drawing. Your photo sheds a lot of light. I agree that it appears the downpipes I was looking at are 2-piece in the AMG and 1 piece in the GLA 250. Oddly enough it looks like the "high-output w/ sport exhaust" is about $100 cheaper than the one without SE.
