Dear all,

I haven't posted many times on the website but the feedback and information obtained has proved to be extremely useful. Thank you all.

I am loving my GLA45, really good car!

Regretfully, I bought the car from the dealer after the order was placed and did not have the opportunity to change anything or include the AMG performance exhaust which I wanted so badly....

On the positive side, I have managed to find someone willing to supply the main AMG exhaust line. I am aware that basically the difference between the sports exhaust and the performance one is that the latter lacks a further resonator. In theory, by buying the AMG performance main exhaust line I should be fine but I wanted to find out with if you have any more information that could benefit me? Maybe someone has done the retrofit on a GLA, CLA or A-class?

Im not sure if any other parts are necessary? Maybe special heat protection?

Also, I know that the 2016 model includes a button to open or close the valves? I think this could also be easy to install as my GLA45 is already the 2016 version?

Thanks and hopefully someone can give me ideas as to how to retrofit the exhaust.

Also, don't worry about labour costs. Labour is very cheap where I live.

Thank you

Not sure which MY GLA45 you have, but for the 2015 (we have the AMG Performance Exhaust) when you switch to S or M mode the exhaust valve comes open and stays open.

Exactly. Supposedly on the 2016 it's the same exact thing but you have the option of opening up the valves in comfort mode as well!

I desperately need to find out how to retrofit that exhaust!!!!

Don't have the exact answer you looking for but the performance exhaust change consist of changing two pipes of the exhaust not just one. The lengths are not the same so its not a simple swap. Since you have to buy both pieces some find it better to just go aftermarket.

Thank you! That's exactly the sort of feedback I'm looking for.

Does anyone else have any more clues of what's needed for the retrofit?

To be honest, I'm not too sure about an aftermarket exhaust... If I could go with the official Mercedes/AMG route would be great. Also, I'm not convinced that the sound of aftermarket exhausts is as refined as the AMG?

If I'm not mistaken there is also a dashboard switch that is added with the Performance Exhaust that allows you to manually toggle things.
From the mbusa.com site:
"A new dash-mounted control lets you activate the vane at the push of a button."

Yes. I think it shouldn't be a major issue retrofitting that switch as well.

It is exclusive for 2016 version so I cant really see a conflict other than ECU reprogramming by the dealer? Of course I can be 100% mistaken

Again my personal opinion....

Test drive a CLA/GLA with the performance exhaust, see if its worth the trouble.

I have the performance exhaust and sometimes i wished it was louder, maybe in a few years ill upgrade

On this topic, I just decoded the VIN for my GLA45 that docked last week. Was running through the options just to check everything was there and noted it had U21 Sport Exhaust System. According to the ordering guide U21 is actually the AMG Performance Exhaust. Now in Australia they tend to put a lot of the "options" on as standard, and this could well be the case here, but I will be pleasantly surprised if it does indeed come with the AMG Exhaust.

Would anyone be able to confirm if I have U21 listed as an option that it is 100% the AMG Performance Exhaust, and I could expect to also have the dash button described above?

Has anyone done the performance exhaust retrofit? I am looking into this as I didn't order my car with this option... :(

I disconnect that valve while it was open so its stays that all the time and sounds a little louder.
in C mode no pops, but still louder and sport and M will be pops.

i've been driving mostly in Sport mode since i like the suspension in comfort setting and transmission in auto. i just tried it out with individual mode with engine at Sport+ setting and the rest the same as Sport mode and i feel like the exhaust is significantly louder especially in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear. i didn't think sport vs. sport+ would make that much difference.

I don't have my build sheet at the moment, but generally the term "Sport Exhaust" means it is NOT the "Performance Exhaust".

That being said, they both have flaps that open up and change the sound. The PE setup being much more aggressive than the SE.

Sorry I'm late to this thread and sorry for the bad news, but "U21 Sport Exhaust" is NOT the same as "Performance Exhaust".

SE does have an electronic valve gate, but different piping and no exhaust button (it will automatically come on in sports mode).

PE has significantly different hardware underneath.

I just checked with the order guide I used to order my GLA45 in 2017 for the 2018 model. The only exhaust option is U21 and it specifically called out there is a dedicated button on the dashboard. My car doesn't have this option, just the regular exhaust and I don't have a dedicated button for exhaust. See Attached screen shot.

So what is Performance Exhaust that is supposedly even more exotic than U21 Sport Exhaust?

At this point I'm guessing that for some dumb reason the U21# is used for both.

The difference?? One again, my WAG...
1. the button on the dash,
2. a different resonator in the pipe, and
3. possibly some type of 2-pipe configuration mid-line.
...all just for sound and not for performance most likely

So it may be easier and cost effective to look at aftermarket
