2018 GLA 2.1 Exhaust Gas Recirculation P0401 Code

Hello!

I'm looking for some help/advice please.

My partner purchased a 2018 GLA back in May 2022 with 33,000 miles on the clock.

Within 2 months of leaving the dealership the EML came on and a quick plug in showed a P0401 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Insufficient. The car was swiftly taken back to the dealer who said they'd cleaned the EGR and the issue shouldn't reoccur.

Around June 2023 the EML came on again with the same fault (the warrenty from the dealership had now expired). The car was taken to a garage who though it was a spring(?) No confidence there. They reset the EML and off we went.

For months we tried to find out what the issue was when we were eventually told to replace the EGR and Cooler which we did.

Since then the EML has come on and P0401 code has returned. Every garage we go to is absolutely stumped because there is minimal carbon build up as the car is used for long distance journeys.

Has anyone experienced anything like this or got any recommendations on what to look for next? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Mike
Hi Mike,
I have almost the exact same story excepting mine is a 2016 GLA d (AMG line) with similar mileage. I have also consulted 2 or 3 diagnostic centers but none have a difinitive answer or even a suggestion.
My EML comes on then off for maybe 3 or 4 trips (short and/or long) then on again and so on. Sometimes I can overide it by switching off then on again, similarly sometimes I feel restricted perfomance when on, other times not.
I have tried EGR cleaner, in the fuel and directly into intake, tried super diesel, now using regular with Archoil diesel additive, all with little or no change.
I spoke with an owner of a MB220 d who told me he has been all around Europe and here in UK for months with the EML on and has had no problems.
I look forward to any further comments and suggestions.

Yeah, sounds like we have exactly the same problem and have tried the same possible remedies with the same results. I am thinking about getting the management system remapped to bypass the sensor, if that's possible.
