The Vin Date on my 2016 GLA45 has the following:
Model GLA 45 AMG
Colour CALCITE WHITE - STANDARD FINISH (650U)
Upholstery LEATHER/NAPPA/SEMI-ANILINE - BLACK/ANTHRACITE (811A)
Production Date 2016-04-27
Check mileage !! CHECK HISTORY !!
Order Nr. 0690123842
Production Nr. 4121728

And further down

14U S16U MARTPHONE INTEGRATION PACKAGE
SMARTPHONE INTEGRATION APPLE CARPLAY

However I am unable to connect my iPhone 11 Pro Max and get any CarPlay. My phone will not even recognise my vehicle in General Settings - CarPlay. Any suggestions or advice on being able to enter engineering menu to check if CarPlay can be re-activated would be greatly appreciated.

I presume you first connected/associated your iPhone via Bluetooth? You can then also set to automatically recognize that phone thereafter. Then you should be stepped thru the Apple CarPlay menu.

Typically a cable connection is more assured for CarPlay itself in the now older GLA models. An Apple cable is fine so no need to pay for the more expensive dealership one. Note that one of the two USB-A ports in the center console is CarPlay capable, so marked with an icon (the other unmarked port being power only).

All the best.

Thanks Huey52 for your input. Y phone is connected and usable for both receiving and sending calls. When I connect my phone to the correct USB port in the centre.console I get no Carplay icons either on my phone or on my display. It’s like CarPlay just doesn’t exist.

Hmmmm .... certainly with your cited Smartphone Integration - CarPlay option you should have the capability. Alas it would seem time for a dealership visit to further diagnose.

Click the media button on the headunit to open the source menu. Scroll until you see Apple CarPlay. Then go to the bottom menu of the screen and open the CarPlay settings. Make sure automatic CarPlay activation is on. if it isn't, there's the problem.
if you don't see CarPlay as an option in the source menu, then it got deactivated. A dealer should be the only one to go into the engineering menu since other members have had issues when playing around in there.

Also check that the ports are free of dust/debris. Does the phone start charging when connected? if not, try another cable and check the fuses (passenger side footwell, under the carpet). its unlikely that the connector for the wiring to the USB port is disconnected, but that's worth checking too before booking the car in, but if you're not comfortable disassembling the console, that may be a job for the dealer too.

At least in the USA our 2017 GLA45 was the first offering of Carplay / AA. In fact, when we arrived in Sindelfingen to pick up our car the two instructors who handed the car off to us thought it was not available. I had to pull out my documentation for them. Then they could not connect until they got to a third phone. The cables can be a problem too. When we got back to the hotel I had to screw around (a lot) to get my phone to connect. The whole system is finicky.

On the 2016 the Smart phone interface may be mirroring rather than Carplay. Dealers can update the 2016 to Carplay but it requires adding a cable.

Good luck and please keep us updated.

Thanks for the info. I’ll check all that out and let you know if I have any success.

No success so far. Without going back to Mercedes Deakership. I really need to get a reliable method to enter the engineering menu to check if the CarPlay option has been de-activated. I did have CarPlay when I installed a 10.25” Anrdroid Auto/CarPlay display screen some months ago but found the whole system unreliable so won’t back to my original Comand/Audio 20 Display. Everything works fine except no CarPlay.

You must not have reconnected the "CarPlay" wire. Just teasing. ;) Again, at this point it might just be easier to have a Mercedes dealership employ their proprietary electronics diagnostic tool to fully diagnose.
